In Honor of Tonight's All-Star Game, One of My Most Memorable Sports Betting Defeats
Way back in 2009 my friend Ben had a bit of a cold streak in sports betting. It got so bad that our friend John and I both told him that we would take the other side of whatever bet he wanted - without vig - as long as we could confirm the line on one of the major sports betting sites.
One of the (multiple hundreds of) games Ben bet against us was the 2009 NBA All-Star Game. He took Over 264 for the game (tonight's game total is a whopping 295). Now, the loss wasn't memorable because of the amount of money lost (just $30), but because of the way it was lost. John and I were watching the game together and it was getting really close coming down to the end with 261 total points scored. LeBron James goes in for an uncontested dunk and...
...HE MISSES!
We gleefully howled:
"You are such a bum, LeBron!"
"You suck, LeBron!"
"Ben just has to be LOVING this!"
But then instead of just burning 24 seconds off the clock with a 27 point lead and 30 seconds to go, the West dribbles down the court and executes an alley-oop dunk. 263 total points.
Now, we start to get slightly concerned as the ball is inbounded directly to James. He dribbles around for a bit and everyone clears out. We shake our heads and nervously chuckle, both pretty much assured at what is about to happen.
LeBron gets airborne and we both cringe.
BOOM! The thunderous dunk was slammed down with such authority it was almost as if LeBron stared into the camera, looked directly into our living room and said, "this one's for you, Chris and John."
We both literally fell to the floor from laughing so hard and continue to laugh about it to this day (we have since picked ourselves up from the floor, however).
A couple notes:
1. It looks like James might've stepped out of bounds at the 24 second mark in the video.
2. For those who are curious, Ben wagered $14,972 against us over a three-month stretch and finished down $37.50. That's not a typo, it's thirty-seven dollars and fifty cents.
